From an early age, Gilles Deleuze studied the work of Henri Bergson, who was the outstanding figure of French philosophy before Sartre. His monograph "Le bergsonisme" (published in 1966), which explores central concepts of Bergson and continues his critical examination of the claim of knowledge of the exact sciences, is still considered a standard work in France today. Already in 1957, Deleuze compiled a volume with text excerpts from all of Bergson's important works, which is published here for the first time in German under the title "Philosophy of Duration". It is, as it were, the material collection for the "Bergsonisme", and it was with this volume that the rediscovery of Bergson began in France after the Second World War. Deleuze's congenial series of text passages from "Time and Freedom", from "Matter and Memory" and the "Creative Evolution", but also from the essay volumes and the late work offers a good overview of Bergson's thinking. It becomes clear that, in addition to intuition as a method, memory as a medium of temporal experience and the momentum of life (élan vital) as the cause of all change, it is above all duration that is conceptually at the center of Bergson's philosophy. Duration (durée) does not mean (in contrast to the colloquial meaning of the word) the rigid temporal sequence of immutable things, but continuous change: duration is the overarching conceptual concept with which philosophy, in contrast to the experimental sciences, is able to grasp the "everlasting flow of things". All texts have been uniformly re-translated by Margarethe Drewsen; the volume can be read like a compact introduction to Bergson's thinking.
