Alice and Simon are lifelong best friends, living together in old age out of mutual desire for company. Upon embarking on a conference, Simon vanishes. A ghostly visitor alerts Alice to something being wrong, and she embarks on a trip of her own, to look for her best friend. Her adventures take her to the town of Polvin, where the flesh and the soul may not be as good of friends as elsewhere in the world...
