Excerpt from Crop Production Practices; Labor, Power, and Materials, by Operation: January, 1953 In each instance, the farmer was asked to enumerate Operations in the sequence in which they were performed. Kind and size of machine and tractor used and the number of men and the time required per acre were recorded for each Operation. In the case of practices that were repeated, such as cultivating and irrigating, and consistent or signif icant differences in time requirements between practices were noted, the pertinent detail is listed separately in the summary tables. An attempt was made to account for all labor, power, machinery, contract or custom work, and material used in producing and harvesting the crops. In summarizing the data, certain items were combined unless it was apparent that the material or practice was increasing in impor tance and probably would become largely universal. For example, the use of pickeup balers, commercial fertilizers, and some pesticides ap peered to be increasing in importance. These were listed and the per centage of the acreage covered was given so that at a later date changes in practices may be estimated.
