"The main difference between a dog and a man is that the dog has no lies." The novel centers on an ordinary mongrel who goes by a dual identity: Tommy (to his master, a retired army colonel) and Subramanian. The story begins with a rigged dog show at a private club. One of the judges for this show is the story’s narrator - an unsuccessful writer who once penned a fictional tale about a canine revolution where dogs overthrow their masters and appoint loyal humans as their ministers. Showing an eerie level of intelligence, Tommy seemingly tracks and manipulates the narrator before the competition. Despite being a mere street dog competing against exotic purebreds, Tommy manages to win the dog show. Immediately after this unlikely victory, he mysteriously vanishes, kicking off the novel's central pursuit. The narrative quickly expands beyond a simple search for a missing pet. Pillai weaves together two distinctly intertwined storylines set against the backdrop of 1980s Kerala: The Hunt for the Dog: The frantic, escalating search for Tommy after his disappearance, highlighting the absurd lengths his master goes to in order to reclaim his "property." The Hunt for the Revolutionaries: A parallel state police operation searching for a group of Maoist rebels hiding in the region.
