Written by a Department of Conservation archaeologist, this large format book is a comprehensive survey of four kinds of (partly overlapping) historic sites: traditional, archaeological, 19th century, and industrial, including, e.g., sites associated with Kupe, pa, redoubts, and whaling and gum digging sites. The commentary is arranged by type and place, with brief history of why and where sites appear. It has maps, sketch plans, 160 b/w photos, 24 colour photos, glossary, references and name/subject index.
