The 2019 and 2021 Excavations at Sawmill Bank Foot, Raincliffe Woods, Scarborough

Following non-invasive survey and magnetic susceptibility testing trial trenches were carried out in two phases in order to investigate the nature of a low mound within the woodland in particular but exclusively a theory that it may have been a bloomery. The excavations uncovered a length of rough boulder wall associated with a shallow depression. C14 dating of a deposit of charcoal at the base of a depression next to the wall gave a middle Bronze Age date a rare prehistoric survival in this area though the precise function of the structure has yet to be determined. Sampling of the rest of the mound indicate that charcoal burning and iron working may have taken place in the general vicinity.
