Experiential Musicology and Pedagogy: The Application of Musical Creation in the Research to Performance Method of Play Production

The purpose of this study was to examine how the Research to Performance Method, developed at Brown University's Rites and Reason Theatre, creates an interactive experiential pedagogy that is unique in the academic curriculum. As this study highlights the experiential nature of the Research to Performance Method (RPM), it also highlights the educational value that RPM contributes to the teaching of multiple academic disciplines. In addition, this paper has explored how to prepare students musically trained and not trained to create music using the Research to Performance Method.
