Chapelle Creek Memories Growing Up During the Great Depression in South Dakota

"This anthology of short stories for young readers is comprised of the childhood memories of Charlotte Uecker Hyde, a farmwife, painter and local historian who resides in Pierre, South Dakota. Born and raised on the prairie, Charlotte began writing these stories down in the 1980s, inspired by the desire to convey what life was like during the Great Depression to her grandchildren. Filled with ups and downs, her Chapelle Creek Memories provide entertaining accounts of how Charlotte and her classmates used to chase tumbleweeds for fun at recess, how her Pa managed to fend off a wily weasel with a taste for baby chicks, what happened on the morning she set off to school with her sister Marie in the midst of what turned out to be a deadly ground blizzard, and much more. Readers both young and old will now be able to share the experience of everyday chores on the Uecker family farm what it was like to do laundry before the advent of the washing machine, for example as well as extraordinary events. This marvelous compendium is not only a joy to read, it is also a heartwarming tribute to the importance of dedication, family, and putting one's best foot forward during hard times."--
