Out on the Street

Many gay, lesbian, and transgendered youths brave the coming out process only to be rejected by intolerant parents. Their stories often go untold, except among close friends and supporters. Out on the Street helps break the silence. Combining 20 candid, first-person narratives with intimate portraits by renowned photographer Joyce Tenneson, along with childhood snapshots and personal memorabilia, the book celebrates queer young people who have overcome great obstacles to achieve personal and academic success. Through touching and sometimes startling interviews, they share their journeys of finding self-worth despite limitations of family, culture, and society. Some describe the process of finding reconciliation -- with their families, friends, and even themselves. A thoughtful gift, the book touches a broad audience, challenges cultural and social boundaries, and inspires activism on a personal level.
