Sneak Peak “If you judge by appearances in this place,' said Mme de Chartres, 'you will often be deceived, because what appears to be the case hardly ever is.” Synopsis Marie-Madeleine, comtesse de La Fayette's novel La Princesse de Clèves, published anonymously in 1678. The masterpiece, known as France's first historical novel, altered the trajectory of French writing. It is set during Henry II's reign in the 16th century and tells the narrative of a pious young wife, the title character, who hides her feelings for a young lord. La Fayette pioneered the novel of character with this modest story told in dignified, unsentimental prose; much more than a story of unrequited love, it is an intimate psychological portrait. Numerous 18th- and 19th-century writers took the work as a model; in its description of the princess's journey from the protected world of her family to the realm of intrigue and politics in the court, it is the prototype of the bildungsroman.
